Windows Updates Won't Install? Fix It Step by Step

📅 6 August 2026 ⏱ 3 min read 🔧 PC Repair

When Windows Update Just Refuses to Work

You click "Check for updates" and nothing happens — or worse, it spins for hours, throws up an error code, and rolls back. Sound familiar? Windows Update failures are one of the most common problems we see at Campoverde Repair, and they're almost always fixable without replacing anything.

Before you give up or pay someone to reinstall Windows from scratch, work through these steps. Most people are back up and running within half an hour.

Why Does This Happen?

Windows updates fail for a surprisingly small number of reasons:

Step-by-Step Fixes — Try in Order

Step 1: Check Your Date, Time, and Region

Right-click the clock in the bottom-right corner and choose Adjust date/time. Make sure it's set to your actual time zone (Spain is CET/CEST) and that the time is correct. Toggle Set time automatically on. This alone fixes the problem far more often than you'd expect.

Step 2: Free Up Disk Space

Open Settings → System → Storage. If your C: drive has less than 15 GB free, run Storage Sense or the built-in Disk Cleanup tool. Delete temporary files, old downloads, and anything in the Recycle Bin. On older machines with a small SSD, you may need to move photos or documents to an external drive or USB stick first.

Step 3: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Microsoft built a tool specifically for this. Go to Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters and run Windows Update. It will find and fix many common problems automatically. Restart afterwards and try updating again.

Step 4: Reset the Windows Update Cache

This is the most reliable fix for stubborn cases. It clears out those broken download files and starts fresh. Here's how:

  1. Click the Start button, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Type each of these lines and press Enter after each one:
    • net stop wuauserv
    • net stop bits
    • ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
    • net start wuauserv
    • net start bits
  3. Restart your PC, then go to Settings → Windows Update and try again.

Don't be put off by the command prompt — you're not deleting anything important, just renaming a folder so Windows rebuilds it clean.

Step 5: Run System File Checker

If steps 1–4 haven't worked, some core Windows files may be damaged. In the same administrator Command Prompt, type:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and let it run — it takes 10–15 minutes. If it finds problems, it will repair them automatically. Restart and try updating again.

Step 6: Check Your Antivirus

Temporarily disable your third-party antivirus (not Windows Defender — that's fine) and try the update again. If it works, the antivirus is the culprit. Update or replace it — and if it's a pirated or very old version, that's worth sorting regardless. A broken antivirus gives you a false sense of security and causes problems like this.

What If None of This Works?

If you've been through all six steps and Windows still won't update, it's usually one of two things: a deeper corruption that needs an in-place Windows repair (which keeps all your files), or a hardware problem such as a failing hard drive. See our guide on 5 warning signs your laptop needs a repair — a dying drive often shows up as update failures before anything else goes wrong.

At that point, bring it in. At Campoverde Repair in Pinar de Campoverde, we can diagnose exactly what's going wrong, run a full repair, and make sure your machine is properly up to date and protected — usually on the same day. No guessing, no unnecessary parts, no drama.

A PC that can't install updates is a PC that's slowly becoming a security risk. Even if everything seems to be working fine, unpatched Windows is an open door for viruses and ransomware.

FAQ

Why do my Windows updates keep failing in Spain specifically?

Location doesn't directly cause update failures, but common factors in Spain — frequent power cuts affecting file integrity, older laptops with small SSDs, and some locally popular antivirus software — mean we see this a lot on the Costa Blanca. The fixes are exactly the same wherever you are.

Is it safe to use the Command Prompt steps above?

Yes. The commands above stop the Update service, rename a temporary folder (not delete it), then restart the service. You won't lose any personal files or programmes. The worst that can happen is you mistype a command and nothing changes — just try again carefully.

How long should Windows updates take to install?

Small security updates: 5–15 minutes. Major feature updates (like a new version of Windows 11): 30–60 minutes, sometimes longer on older hardware. If it's been "installing" for more than 2 hours without any progress, it has most likely stalled and needs a forced restart.

My PC says 'Update failed' with an error code. What does it mean?

Error codes like 0x80070057 or 0x800f081f look scary but they almost always point back to the same root causes covered above — corrupted cache, low disk space, or a damaged system file. Run through the steps in order and you'll most likely clear it without needing to look up the specific code.
