Windows Update Broke Your Printer? Fix It Step by Step

📅 3 August 2026 ⏱ 4 min read 🔧 PC Repair

Why Does a Windows Update Break Your Printer?

You woke up, turned on your PC, and your printer refuses to work — and the only thing that changed overnight was a Windows update. You're not imagining it, and you're certainly not alone. This is one of the most common support calls we get here on the Costa Blanca, from both Spanish residents and expats alike.

What happens is this: Windows Update sometimes replaces or removes the driver — the small piece of software that lets your PC talk to your printer. It can also reset print settings or corrupt the print queue. The good news is that most of the time you can fix it yourself in under 30 minutes.

Before You Start: Quick Checks

Step 1 — Clear the Print Queue

A stuck print job is the single most common cause of a printer that appears completely dead after an update. Here's how to clear it:

  1. Press the Windows key and type Services, then open the Services app.
  2. Scroll down to Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Stop.
  3. Now open File Explorer and navigate to: C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS
  4. Delete everything inside that folder (do not delete the folder itself).
  5. Go back to Services, right-click Print Spooler again, and choose Start.
  6. Try printing a test page.

This alone fixes the problem in roughly half of the cases we see.

Step 2 — Run the Windows Printer Troubleshooter

Microsoft knows updates cause printer problems, so there is a built-in tool to catch the most common faults:

  1. Go to Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Printer and click Run.
  3. Follow the prompts — it will often reinstall the driver automatically.

On older Windows 10 machines the path is Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Printer.

Step 3 — Reinstall the Printer Driver

If the troubleshooter doesn't crack it, reinstalling the driver manually almost always does. This is especially important for Spanish-market printers — brands like HP, Epson, and Canon all publish drivers for European models that differ slightly from UK or US versions.

  1. Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button → Device Manager).
  2. Expand Printers or Print queues.
  3. Right-click your printer and choose Uninstall device. Tick the box to remove the driver software too.
  4. Visit the manufacturer's website — use the Spanish/EU version of the site where possible (e.g. hp.com/es-es, epson.es, canon.es) — and download the latest driver for your exact model.
  5. Run the installer. It will re-detect your printer and set everything up fresh.

Step 4 — Roll Back the Windows Update (Last Resort)

If none of the above works and you need to print urgently, you can uninstall the problematic update:

  1. Go to Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates.
  2. Look for the most recent update — usually labelled with a KB number and yesterday's date.
  3. Right-click and choose Uninstall. Restart your PC and test the printer.

Bear in mind this is a temporary measure. Security updates should be reinstalled as soon as the driver issue is resolved — skipping Windows updates long-term leaves your PC exposed. A Note on Spanish Printer Models

Here on the Costa Blanca, many residents buy their printers locally from shops like Media Markt or El Corte Inglés. Spanish and European printer models sometimes use different firmware or ink cartridge regions than UK or US versions. If you've moved to Spain and brought a UK printer with you, always download the driver from the UK version of the manufacturer's site — and vice versa. Mixing regions is a surprisingly common cause of ongoing print problems that no amount of troubleshooting will fix.

When to Call in a Technician

If you've worked through all four steps and the printer still won't play ball, there's a reasonable chance the update has corrupted a deeper system file, or there's a hardware conflict that needs a closer look. Bring your PC (and ideally the printer) in to us at Campoverde Repair in Pinar de Campoverde — we'll diagnose it while you wait in most cases. There's no shame in handing it over; some updates genuinely do cause complicated faults that take proper tools to untangle.

FAQ

Why did my printer stop working after a Windows update?

Windows updates can replace, overwrite, or remove the printer driver — the software that allows your PC to communicate with the printer. They can also corrupt the print queue or reset network settings that your printer relies on.

How do I find the right driver for my printer bought in Spain?

Go to the Spanish or European version of the manufacturer's website (e.g. epson.es, hp.com/es-es, canon.es), enter your exact model number, and download the latest driver. Using a driver from a different region can cause ongoing problems.

Is it safe to uninstall a Windows update to fix my printer?

It's safe as a short-term workaround, but security updates should be reinstalled as soon as possible. Leaving your system without recent updates exposes it to security risks.

My printer is connected via Wi-Fi and stopped working after the update — is it the same problem?

Often yes — updates can reset network settings or break the driver. First check the printer is still connected to your Wi-Fi router, then follow the same driver reinstall steps. If the printer has disappeared from the network entirely, try switching it off and on again, then re-running the Windows printer setup wizard.
