Windows Update Killed Your Internet? Here's the Fix

📅 15 July 2026 ⏱ 3 min read 🔧 PC Repair

That sinking feeling: internet gone after a Windows update

You wake up, make a coffee, sit down at the PC — and it won't connect to the internet. Nothing changed, except Windows quietly updated itself overnight. You're not alone: this is one of the most common repair calls we get here on the Costa Blanca, especially after major Windows 11 feature updates. The good news is that most cases can be sorted without touching a single wire.

Work through these steps in order. Most people find the fix within the first three.

Step 1: Restart everything (yes, really)

It sounds obvious, but a proper restart — not just closing the lid — clears a surprising number of post-update glitches. Restart your PC and your router. Unplug the router from the wall, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, then restart Windows. Give it two minutes to fully reconnect before testing.

Step 2: Run the Windows Network Troubleshooter

Windows has a built-in tool that fixes a handful of common faults automatically. Go to Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters and run Internet Connections. It is not magic, but it does reset certain settings that updates sometimes corrupt. If it reports "DNS server not responding" or "Default gateway not available", that's a useful clue for the steps below.

Step 3: Reset the network stack from the Command Prompt

This is the fix that works most often. It flushes the network configuration back to a clean state. Press the Windows key, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Then type each line below, pressing Enter after each one:

  1. netsh winsock reset
  2. netsh int ip reset
  3. ipconfig /release
  4. ipconfig /flushdns
  5. ipconfig /renew

Restart the PC when you're done. This sequence resets the core networking components that Windows updates most commonly disrupt.

Step 4: Roll back or update the network adapter driver

Updates sometimes replace a working driver with one that doesn't suit your hardware. Right-click the Start button → Device Manager, expand Network Adapters, and right-click your Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter. Choose Properties → Driver tab. If a Roll Back Driver button is available (not greyed out), click it — this restores the previous driver. If rollback isn't available, choose Update Driver → Search automatically instead.

Still no luck? Try right-clicking the adapter and selecting Uninstall device, then restarting. Windows will reinstall the driver fresh on boot.

Step 5: Check whether the update itself is the culprit

Microsoft occasionally releases a faulty update and then patches it within days. Go to Settings → Windows Update → Update history and note the KB number of the most recent update. A quick search for that KB number plus "internet not working" will tell you immediately whether it's a known widespread issue. If it is, you can uninstall that specific update: Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates, find it in the list, and remove it. Windows will reinstall a fixed version automatically when Microsoft publishes one.

A note for expats in Spain: your router may not be the problem

Many English-speaking residents on the Costa Blanca use internet from Movistar, Orange, Vodafone or a local provider. If the steps above don't help, plug a cable directly from the router into your PC (bypassing Wi-Fi entirely). If a wired connection works but Wi-Fi doesn't, the issue is almost certainly the Wi-Fi adapter driver — see Step 4. If neither works, log into your router's admin page (usually 192.168.1.1) and check whether the WAN connection shows as active. If the router itself has lost its line, that's a call to your ISP — not a PC problem.

Don't sit offline for days trying endless YouTube fixes. Sometimes 30 minutes with the right tools saves hours of frustration.

FAQ

Why does Windows Update break my internet connection?

Updates can overwrite network drivers with incompatible versions, reset TCP/IP stack settings, or introduce bugs in network-related system files. It's frustrating but usually fixable in under 30 minutes.

Will resetting the network stack delete my files or passwords?

No. The netsh and ipconfig commands only reset network configuration — your documents, photos, browser passwords and apps are completely untouched.

My laptop says 'Connected' but pages won't load — is that the same problem?

Often yes. This usually means the IP address or DNS settings were corrupted by the update. The Command Prompt steps in Step 3 target exactly this fault.

How long does a network repair take at Campoverde Repair?

Most post-update connectivity faults are diagnosed and fixed the same day, often within an hour or two. We'll give you a clear estimate before doing any work.
