Windows Won't Connect After Movistar/Vodafone Changed Settings

📅 30 July 2026 ⏱ 4 min read 🔧 PC Repair

What Just Happened — and Why Your PC Is the Problem, Not the Router

You ring Movistar or Vodafone support, they sort out whatever issue they were called about, and suddenly your Windows PC won't connect to the internet. Your phone works fine on the same wifi. Your tablet is fine. It's just the PC. Frustrating — but this is almost always fixable in under 20 minutes, without calling anyone back.

When Spanish ISP technicians (or their automated systems) push a settings update, they often change the router's network name (SSID), the wifi password, the local IP address range, or all three. Windows gets confused because it's still looking for the old network. Here's how to sort it.

A home wifi router with blinking indicator lights

Step 1: Restart Everything in the Right Order

Before touching any settings, do a proper restart sequence:

  1. Turn off your PC completely (not just sleep).
  2. Unplug your router/modem from the mains. Wait a full 60 seconds.
  3. Plug the router back in and wait until its lights settle — usually 2–3 minutes.
  4. Turn your PC back on.

This sounds obvious, but it fixes about a third of cases on its own. Windows sometimes caches old network data that only clears on a full power cycle.

Step 2: Forget the Old Network and Reconnect

If you're on wifi, Windows may still be trying to connect using the old password or old network name. You need to make it start fresh.

  1. Click the wifi icon in the bottom-right taskbar.
  2. Click Manage known networks.
  3. Find your home network (or any old version of it) and click Forget.
  4. Now click the wifi icon again, find your network in the list, and connect — entering the new password from your router's label or from your ISP's paperwork.

Tip: The new wifi password is usually printed on a sticker on the bottom or back of the router. It may say "WPA Key", "WiFi Password", or "Clave WiFi".

Step 3: Reset Windows Network Settings

If forgetting the network didn't help, Windows itself may have a corrupted network configuration. This is more common than people think — especially after a Windows Update runs at the same time as a router change.

Open the Start menu, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Then type each of these lines, pressing Enter after each one:

Restart your PC afterwards. These commands clear out the network "memory" Windows has built up and force it to request a fresh connection from your router.

Step 4: Check Your IP Address Settings

Occasionally, a PC is set to use a fixed (static) IP address from an older router setup. When the router changes its IP range, the PC ends up on the wrong range and can't talk to the router at all.

To check: press Windows key + R, type ncpa.cpl and press Enter. Right-click your wifi or ethernet connection and choose Properties. Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Make sure both options are set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". Click OK and try again.

Step 5: Update or Reinstall Your Network Driver

A Windows Update can sometimes install a buggy network driver without warning. If none of the above has worked, this is worth checking.

Right-click the Start button, choose Device Manager, expand Network Adapters, right-click your wifi or ethernet adapter, and select Update driver → Search automatically. If it finds nothing, try Uninstall device (don't worry — Windows will reinstall it on next reboot) and restart your PC.

When It's Time to Get Help

If you've worked through all five steps and the PC still won't connect, the problem is likely one of the following: a failing network card, a deeper Windows fault, or — occasionally — the router itself blocking the PC's MAC address after a security reset. These are not DIY territory for most people.

We see this exact situation regularly at Campoverde Repair, especially after Movistar technician visits in Pilar de la Horadada and the surrounding urbanisations. It's usually a quick fix in the workshop. Got a desktop PC plugged in by ethernet cable and it still won't connect? Run through Steps 3 and 4 first — the "forget network" step doesn't apply, but a bad IP config or corrupted driver is just as likely.

FAQ

Why does my phone connect to wifi but my Windows PC doesn't?

Your phone treats every network as new, so it picked up the updated settings automatically. Windows, on the other hand, clings to what it already knows. Forgetting the network in Windows and reconnecting with the new password usually sorts it.

I don't know the new wifi password after Movistar changed my router. Where do I find it?

Check the sticker on the bottom or back of your router — it's usually labelled "Clave WiFi", "WPA Key", or "WiFi Password". If it's not there, call Movistar or Vodafone and ask them to confirm the credentials they set.

Will the Command Prompt commands delete anything important?

No. They only reset the networking part of Windows — your files, programmes, and settings are completely untouched. The PC will just request a fresh network connection on the next restart.

My ethernet cable connection doesn't work either. Is it the router or the PC?

Plug a different device into the same ethernet port. If that device works, the fault is with your PC's network settings or driver. If nothing works on that port, the router may need attention. Contact us at Campoverde Repair and we'll help you work out which it is.
