Windows PC Won't Connect to Hotspot in Spain

📅 8 August 2026 ⏱ 3 min read 🔧 PC Repair

Your Hotspot Is On — So Why Won't Windows Connect?

You've lost your home broadband, or you're working away from home, and your Movistar or Orange mobile SIM is sitting there with a perfectly good signal. You turn on the hotspot on your phone — and Windows either ignores it, fails to connect, or connects and then shows "No internet". Frustrating doesn't cover it.

The good news: this is almost always fixable in a few minutes without any technical know-how. Work through these steps in order and you'll almost certainly solve it before you reach the bottom of the page.

Step 1 — Check the Basics on Your Phone First

Before you touch the PC, confirm a few things on your phone:

Step 2 — Forget the Network and Reconnect Fresh

Windows sometimes caches a bad connection. Go to Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks, find your hotspot name, click Forget, then reconnect from scratch and re-enter the password carefully.

Step 3 — Run the Windows Network Troubleshooter

It sounds like a cop-out, but it genuinely fixes a surprising number of issues. Right-click the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar and choose Troubleshoot problems. Let it run and apply any fixes it suggests. On Windows 11 it's under Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Internet Connections.

Step 4 — Reset Your Network Settings in Windows

This is the single most effective fix and it's completely safe. Open Command Prompt as Administrator (search for "cmd", right-click, "Run as administrator") and type these commands one at a time, pressing Enter after each:

  1. netsh winsock reset
  2. netsh int ip reset
  3. ipconfig /release
  4. ipconfig /flushdns
  5. ipconfig /renew

Restart your PC when done, then try the hotspot again. This clears corrupted network configuration that Windows quietly accumulates over time.

Step 5 — Update or Reinstall Your Wi-Fi Driver

An outdated or corrupted Wi-Fi driver is a common culprit, especially after a Windows Update. Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button), expand Network adapters, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter and choose Update driver → Search automatically. If that finds nothing new, try Uninstall device and then restart — Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

Step 6 — Change the Hotspot Frequency Band on Your Phone

Many modern phones default to broadcasting the hotspot on the 5 GHz band. Older laptops — and plenty of not-so-old ones — only support 2.4 GHz. Go into your phone's hotspot settings and switch the band to 2.4 GHz. The connection speed will be slightly lower, but it will actually work.

Step 7 — Check the IP Address Type (DHCP)

In Windows, go to Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi → [your hotspot network] → Edit IP assignment and make sure it's set to Automatic (DHCP). If someone (or something) has set a manual IP address, it won't match what your phone's hotspot expects, and the connection will fail silently.

A Quick Comparison: Most Common Causes and Fixes

Still Not Working?

If you've worked through all seven steps and Windows still refuses to connect, the problem is likely a deeper driver conflict, a faulty Wi-Fi card, or occasionally a software conflict left behind by a VPN or security tool. These are straightforward to diagnose in person but tricky to chase remotely.

If your laptop has other quirks too — sluggishness, odd behaviour, or warning signs that it needs a proper check-up — it's worth having it looked at rather than spending more hours troubleshooting. We're based in Pinar de Campoverde and can usually turn these things around the same day.

FAQ

Why does my Windows PC say 'No internet' even though the hotspot is connected?

This usually means your phone's mobile data is exhausted or paused (check your Movistar or Orange data balance), or Windows has grabbed a wrong IP address. Run the network reset commands in Step 4 and check your data allowance first.

My laptop can see other Wi-Fi networks but not my phone's hotspot — why?

Your phone is almost certainly broadcasting on 5 GHz, which older Wi-Fi cards can't detect. Go into your phone's hotspot settings and change the frequency to 2.4 GHz. The hotspot will then appear in Windows.

Will resetting network settings delete my saved Wi-Fi passwords?

The netsh and ipconfig commands in Step 4 reset the network stack and DNS cache but do not delete your saved Wi-Fi passwords. Those are stored separately in Windows Credential Manager.

Does this fix work for both Movistar and Orange SIMs in Spain?

Yes — the issue is always between Windows and your phone's hotspot, not the Spanish operator. The same steps work regardless of whether you're on Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, or any other Spanish carrier.
