PC Freezes When You Plug In USB? Fix It Step by Step

📅 22 July 2026 ⏱ 4 min read 🔧 PC Repair

Why Does My PC Freeze When I Plug In a USB Device?

You plug in a USB stick, a phone charger, or a printer — and the whole PC locks up. The screen freezes, the mouse stops moving, and you're left staring at a hung desktop waiting to see if it recovers. It's one of the most frustrating faults a Windows computer can have, and it's surprisingly common here on the Costa Blanca, especially in older machines that have had a hard time with the summer heat.

The good news: in most cases this is fixable, and you don't need to be a technician to try the first few steps.

What's Actually Causing It?

Before you start clicking around, it helps to know the four most common culprits:

Work through the steps below in order. Most people find a fix before they reach the end.

Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1 — Test a Different USB Device First

Swap the device. Try a different USB stick or cable in the same port. If the freeze disappears, the original device is faulty — job done. If it still freezes, try a different USB port on the same machine. This tells you whether the problem is one port or the whole USB system.

Step 2 — Restart and Check for Windows Updates

It sounds obvious, but a pending Windows Update can leave drivers in a broken half-installed state. Go to Settings → Windows Update and install everything that's waiting. Restart fully — not sleep, a proper shutdown and restart — then test again.

Step 3 — Update (or Roll Back) Your USB Drivers

Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. You're looking for anything with a yellow warning triangle. Right-click each USB item and choose Update driver → Search automatically. If the freezing started right after a Windows update, try Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver instead.

Step 4 — Turn Off USB Selective Suspend

This power-saving setting is a common cause of USB freezes. To disable it:

  1. Open the Start menu and search for Edit power plan.
  2. Click Change advanced power settings.
  3. Find USB settings → USB selective suspend setting.
  4. Set it to Disabled for both On battery and Plugged in.
  5. Click OK and restart.

Step 5 — Run a Quick Health Check on Your Hard Drive

If the freeze comes with a spinning cursor and a long delay before recovery, your hard drive or SSD may be struggling. Open Command Prompt as Administrator (right-click Start → Windows Terminal/Command Prompt, run as admin) and type:

chkdsk C: /f /r

Windows will ask to schedule the check on next restart — say yes. The scan runs before Windows loads and can fix file system errors that cause system-wide hangs. If chkdsk reports bad sectors, the drive needs replacing sooner rather than later. See our post on 5 warning signs your laptop needs a repair for more on what to watch for.

Step 6 — Check for Malware

Some malware interferes with hardware events, making a USB plug-in trigger a system hang. Run a full scan with Windows Defender (or Malwarebytes free edition) before concluding it's a hardware fault.

When to Bring It In

If you've worked through all six steps and it's still freezing, the problem is likely at a hardware level — a failing USB controller on the motherboard, a dying hard drive, or in rare cases overheating components. These aren't jobs for a screwdriver and a YouTube video; they need proper diagnostics.

At Campoverde Repair in Pinar de Campoverde, we diagnose these faults every week. We can run a full hardware test, replace a drive, and have most machines back to you the same day or next day. No call centres, no jargon — just a straight answer and a fair price.

FAQ

Why does my Windows PC freeze only when I plug in a USB device?

Usually it's a driver conflict, a power management setting called USB Selective Suspend, or a fault with the device itself. Work through the steps above — most cases are solved without needing a repair shop.

Can a USB device damage my PC if it causes freezing?

A faulty USB device can corrupt files if the PC crashes mid-write, but it won't physically damage the computer in normal circumstances. Stop using the device until you've diagnosed the problem.

Will reinstalling Windows fix USB freezing?

Sometimes, but it's a last resort. Try updating drivers and disabling USB Selective Suspend first — a full reinstall takes hours and often isn't necessary.

My PC freezes when I plug in a phone to charge — is that different?

Not really. Your phone appears as a USB device to Windows, so the same causes apply. Try a different cable first — cheap charging cables are a surprisingly common source of USB conflicts.
