Laptop Screen: Replace It or Just Fix the Settings?

📅 24 June 2026 ⏱ 4 min read 🔧 PC Repair

Is Your Screen Broken, or Just Misbehaving?

A laptop screen that looks wrong is instantly alarming — dim, washed out, flickering, or showing strange colours. Before you assume the worst, it's worth knowing that a surprisingly large number of these problems turn out to be settings issues, driver faults, or a loose cable rather than a broken panel. That said, some screens really are done for, and carrying on with a damaged display can make things worse.

This guide walks you through what to look for so you can make a sensible decision — fix it yourself, or bring it in for a proper repair.

Start Here: The Quick Checks Anyone Can Do

1. Adjust the Brightness First

It sounds obvious, but brightness settings get changed accidentally all the time — especially on laptops where function keys are easy to brush. On Windows, press Fn + F5/F6 (the exact keys depend on your laptop brand). On a Mac, use the dedicated brightness keys or open System Settings → Displays. If the screen brightens up normally, you're done.

2. Check the Display Settings

Right-click the desktop → Display Settings (Windows) or System Settings → Displays (Mac). Look at the resolution — if it's set wrong the image will look blurry or stretched. Make sure it's set to the Recommended option. Also check colour profiles: an accidentally changed profile can make everything look green, blue, or washed out.

3. Update or Roll Back the Graphics Driver

A faulty or recently updated graphics driver causes all sorts of display weirdness — flickering, colour banding, the screen going black momentarily. In Windows, open Device Manager → Display Adapters, right-click your graphics card and choose Update driver. If the problem started right after a Windows Update, try Roll Back Driver instead. This one fix solves a lot of cases.

4. Plug in an External Monitor

This is the single most useful test you can do at home. Borrow a TV or monitor, connect it via HDMI or a USB-C adapter, and press Fn + F4 (or your laptop's screen-toggle key) to send the picture to it. If the external display looks perfectly fine, the problem is definitely in the laptop's own screen hardware — the panel, the cable, or the backlight. If the external display shows the same problem, the fault is in the graphics card or software, not the screen itself.

Signs the Screen Itself Is Physically Damaged

Some things can only mean one thing: hardware failure. If you see any of the following, no settings change will help:

The Hinge Test (Often Overlooked)

Open and close the lid slowly while watching the screen. If the display flickers, dims, or cuts out at a particular angle, the video cable running through the hinge is failing. This is one of the most common screen faults we see — and it's usually a straightforward cable replacement, not a full screen replacement. The difference in cost is significant, so it's worth diagnosing properly before assuming you need a new panel.

DIY or Bring It In?

The settings and driver steps above are safe to try yourself — they cost nothing and can't cause further damage. Beyond that, it's not worth guessing. A screen replacement on a laptop involves dismantling the lid assembly, and an incorrect part or a cracked ribbon cable will turn a £80 fix into a much bigger bill. If your external monitor test points to a hardware fault, it really does pay to get a proper diagnosis first.

FAQ

How much does a laptop screen replacement cost?

It varies quite a bit depending on the laptop model and screen type. Budget laptops might need a £60–£90 panel; premium or touchscreen models can be considerably more. A proper diagnosis first means you only pay for what you actually need.

Can I use my laptop with a broken screen by plugging in a monitor?

Yes, as a short-term workaround it works fine — connect an HDMI monitor and use your laptop like a desktop. But it's not ideal long-term, and a cracked LCD can leak chemicals over time, so it's worth getting it fixed.

My laptop screen flickers when I open the lid past a certain point. Is that the screen or the cable?

Almost certainly the display cable running through the hinge. It's a very common fault after a few years of use. The good news is it's usually cheaper to fix than a full screen replacement.

My screen went completely black but I can still hear the laptop running. What's wrong?

Shine a torch at the screen at an angle — if you can faintly see the desktop, the backlight has failed rather than the whole panel, which can be a cheaper fix. If you see nothing at all, plug in an external monitor to check whether the graphics are still working.
