Can't Submit Your Renta on Agencia Tributaria? Fix It

📅 14 August 2026 ⏱ 4 min read 🔧 PC Repair

Every Tax Season, the Same Headache

You sit down to file your Spanish Renta (income tax declaration), you open the Agencia Tributaria's Sede Electrónica, and then… nothing. The button doesn't work, the page won't load properly, the certificate isn't recognised, or you get a cryptic error message you've never seen before. You're not alone — this is one of the most common calls we get at Campoverde Repair every spring.

The good news: in the vast majority of cases, this is a software configuration problem, not a broken computer. Work through the steps below in order and you'll almost certainly crack it.

Step 1 — Use the Right Browser

This is the single most common fix. The Agencia Tributaria's website works best in Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Microsoft Edge can work, but it causes more problems than it solves. Internet Explorer is completely unsupported — if you're still using it, stop now.

Step 2 — Check Your Digital Certificate or Cl@ve PIN

You need one of these to identify yourself on the site. There are three main options:

Adjusting browser settings on a Windows laptop to fix compatibility issues
MethodWhat it isCommon problem
Digital CertificateA file installed on your PC, issued by FNMTExpired, not installed in the browser, or installed on a different PC
DNI electrónico (eID)Your Spanish ID card + a card readerDriver not installed, card reader not recognised
Cl@ve PIN / Cl@ve permanenteA PIN-based login via the Cl@ve app or SMSApp not set up, PIN expired

Digital Certificate: Open Chrome or Firefox, go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Manage Certificates (in Chrome) or Certificate Manager (in Firefox). Your certificate should appear there with a valid date. If it's expired or missing, you'll need to renew or re-download it from the FNMT website (fnmt.es). You can request a new one online but you must verify your identity — either in person at a Hacienda office or via video call (a process FNMT now supports).

DNI electrónico: Plug your card reader in, then install the official drivers from the Policía Nacional's website. The reader should appear in Windows Device Manager without a yellow warning triangle. The Agencia Tributaria also provides a free tool called AutoFirma — install that too, as many signing steps require it.

Cl@ve: If you haven't registered yet, you can do so at any Hacienda or Social Security office with your NIE/passport. Once registered, the Cl@ve PIN method is the simplest — you request a PIN via SMS each time you log in.

Step 3 — Install or Update AutoFirma

AutoFirma is free software from the Spanish government that handles electronic signatures on official sites. Many people skip it and then wonder why the final submission button does nothing.

Step 4 — Disable Problematic Browser Extensions

Ad blockers, VPNs, and some privacy extensions can interfere with the Agencia Tributaria's security checks. Try this:

Step 5 — Check Your Date, Time and Region Settings

This one surprises people. If your PC's clock is wrong — even by a few minutes — digital certificates will be rejected as invalid. Right-click the clock in the bottom-right corner of Windows → Adjust date/time → turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically. Make sure the time zone is Europe/Madrid.

Step 6 — Clear the Browser Cache

Old cached data from a previous version of the Agencia Tributaria site can cause strange errors. In Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + Delete → tick Cached images and files → Clear data. Then close and reopen Chrome and try again.

Still Stuck? It May Be Your Windows Version

If you're running Windows 7 or Windows 8, some cryptographic protocols used by the Agencia Tributaria are no longer supported — and honestly, those operating systems shouldn't be connected to the internet at all anymore. Windows 10 or 11 is required. If upgrading Windows feels daunting, have a look at our post on warning signs your laptop may need attention — it might be time for a broader health check while you're at it.

FAQ

Why does the Agencia Tributaria website say my certificate is not valid?

Usually the certificate has expired, is installed in the wrong browser profile, or your PC's clock is incorrect. Check the certificate's expiry date in your browser's certificate manager and verify your system clock is accurate and set to the Europe/Madrid time zone.

Do I need Java installed to use the Agencia Tributaria website?

No — Java is no longer required. The modern Sede Electrónica uses AutoFirma instead. If any website tells you to install Java, be cautious; the official Agencia Tributaria site does not need it.

Can I file my Renta on a Mac or a phone instead?

Yes, Macs work well with the correct browser and AutoFirma installed (there's a Mac version). Filing on a smartphone is possible via the Agencia Tributaria's app and Cl@ve, but for anything complex, a laptop or desktop is far easier.

My AutoFirma app opens but nothing happens when I click to sign. What's wrong?

This is usually a permissions issue — Windows is blocking AutoFirma from connecting to the browser. Try right-clicking the AutoFirma installer and choosing 'Run as administrator', then reinstall. Also check that your antivirus isn't blocking it.
