Cl@ve & Certificado Digital Not Working on Windows

📅 10 August 2026 ⏱ 4 min read 🔧 PC Repair

Why Won't It Let Me Log In?

You sit down to sort out your Spanish taxes or check something on Sede Electrónica (the official Spanish government online portal), you click the Cl@ve or Certificado Digital button — and nothing happens, or you get a cryptic error message. You're not alone. This is one of the most common problems we see from expats and residents on the Costa Blanca, and it nearly always comes down to a handful of fixable things on your Windows PC.

Work through these steps in order. Most people are sorted by step three or four.

Step 1 — Use the Right Browser (This Alone Fixes Many Cases)

The Spanish government's Sede Electrónica works best with Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Microsoft Edge sometimes works, but it has caused problems with certificate detection. Safari (on Windows) won't work at all.

Step 2 — Install or Reinstall AutoFirma

AutoFirma is a small piece of free software from the Spanish government that handles digital signatures and certificate authentication. Without it, Sede Electrónica simply cannot communicate with your Certificado Digital.

  1. Go to autofirma.ctt.gob.es and download the latest Windows version.
  2. If you already have it installed, uninstall it first (Windows Settings → Apps), then do a fresh install.
  3. After installing, restart your PC — don't skip this.
  4. When AutoFirma runs for the first time it may ask to install a local certificate in your browser. Click Allow or Yes.

Step 3 — Import Your Certificado Digital Correctly

If you're using a Certificado Digital (the file you get from FNMT — Spain's national mint and stamp factory — after an in-person verification), it needs to be properly imported into both Windows and your browser.

  1. Double-click the .p12 or .pfx certificate file. Windows will open the Certificate Import Wizard.
  2. Choose Current User (not Local Machine unless you know what you're doing).
  3. Enter the password you set when you downloaded the certificate.
  4. On the certificate store screen, choose Automatically select the certificate store.
  5. Finish the wizard and restart your browser.

In Firefox specifically: Firefox uses its own certificate store. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → View Certificates → Import, and import the .p12 file there as well.

Step 4 — Check Your Cl@ve PIN or Permanente Registration

Cl@ve comes in two forms: Cl@ve PIN (a temporary code sent by SMS or the app) and Cl@ve Permanente (a fixed password). Common issues:

Step 5 — Clear Browser Cache and Disable Conflicting Extensions

An old cached page or a VPN/ad-blocker extension can silently break the login process.

Step 6 — Check Your Windows Date, Time and Region

Digital certificates are time-sensitive. If your PC clock is wrong by more than a few minutes, the certificate will be rejected as invalid. Right-click the clock in the taskbar → Adjust date/time → make sure "Set time automatically" is on.

Also check: Windows Settings → Time & Language → Region. Make sure the region is set to Spain or at least to a compatible EU locale.

Still Not Working? It Might Be the Certificate Itself

Certificados Digitales expire after 4 years (2 years for companies). If yours is out of date, no amount of browser tweaking will help — you'll need to renew it at sede.fnmt.gob.es. Renewals can be done online if you do it before it expires; after expiry, you'll need an in-person appointment.

If you've worked through all six steps and it's still broken, the problem is likely a deeper Windows certificate store conflict or a corrupted AutoFirma installation — the kind of thing that's much quicker to sort with someone sitting in front of your machine. See our guide on warning signs your PC needs a proper check-up — some of these login failures are symptoms of a wider Windows issue.

FAQ

Why does my Certificado Digital work on one computer but not another?

The certificate file is tied to the Windows certificate store and browser of the machine it was imported on. You need to export the .p12 file from the working machine and import it on the new one, or download a fresh copy from FNMT if you registered online.

Do I need Cl@ve AND a Certificado Digital, or just one?

You only need one. Cl@ve (PIN or Permanente) and the Certificado Digital are two different ways to prove your identity online to Spanish government services. Most individuals find Cl@ve Permanente the easiest for everyday use; the Certificado Digital is useful for businesses and professionals who need to sign documents digitally.

AutoFirma keeps crashing or won't open — what do I do?

This usually means either the Java runtime it depends on is outdated, or the installation is corrupt. Uninstall AutoFirma completely, restart, then download and install the latest version from autofirma.ctt.gob.es. If it still crashes, your PC may have a conflicting Java version — bring it in or contact us for a remote session.

Can I use Cl@ve or Certificado Digital on a Mac or phone?

Yes, with some differences. On a Mac you still need AutoFirma installed, and Chrome or Firefox works best. On a phone, the Cl@ve app handles PIN login, but full certificate-based signing generally requires a desktop or laptop.
