AutoFirma Not Working on Windows? Fix It Step by Step

📅 4 August 2026 ⏱ 4 min read 🔧 PC Repair

You need to sign an official document online — a tax return, a NIE application, something from the Ayuntamiento — and AutoFirma simply won't open, throws an error, or freezes your browser. You're not alone. This is one of the most common frustrations for both Spanish residents and expats on the Costa Blanca, and it's almost always fixable without calling anyone.

Let's go through it methodically. Work through each step in order and stop when it's working.

What AutoFirma Actually Is (and Why It's Fussy)

AutoFirma is a free application made by the Spanish government (MPTFP) that lets you sign official documents digitally using your certificado digital (digital certificate) or DNIe. It works alongside your browser — Chrome, Firefox, or Edge — and relies on Java and on your certificate being correctly installed in Windows. Any one of those three things being out of order is enough to break it completely.

Installing Java on a Windows PC for AutoFirma

Step 1 — Download the Latest Version of AutoFirma

Old versions break silently. Go directly to the official source: autofirma.ctt.gob.es. Download the Windows installer (the .exe file). Before installing, right-click the downloaded file → Properties → tick "Unblock" at the bottom if you see that option. Then run the installer as Administrator (right-click → Run as administrator). This alone fixes a surprising number of cases.

If you already have AutoFirma installed, uninstall it fully via Settings → Apps before reinstalling. Leaving old files behind causes conflicts.

Step 2 — Install or Update Java

AutoFirma needs a compatible version of Java to run. Go to java.com, download the latest free version, and install it. If you already have Java, open the Java Control Panel and check for updates. After updating Java, restart your PC before trying AutoFirma again.

Note for Windows 11 users: Some older Java versions refuse to install cleanly on Windows 11. Make sure you're downloading the most recent release — version 8 Update 401 or later.

Step 3 — Check Your Digital Certificate Is Installed

AutoFirma reads your certificate from the Windows Certificate Store. To check it's there:

  1. Press Windows key + R, type certmgr.msc and press Enter.
  2. Open Personal → Certificates.
  3. Your certificate (issued by FNMT, AC CAMERFIRMA, or similar) should appear here with a valid expiry date.

If it's missing or expired, you'll need to renew or re-import it. The FNMT website (www.sede.fnmt.gob.es) has the full renewal process. Expired certificates are a very common culprit — worth checking even if you think yours is fine.

Step 4 — Try a Different Browser (and Configure It Correctly)

AutoFirma works best with Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on Windows. Firefox can work but is more temperamental. If you're using a very old version of Internet Explorer, that's your problem right there — it's no longer supported.

In Chrome or Edge, make sure you're allowing the AutoFirma local application to connect when the browser asks. If you dismissed that prompt, go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Site Settings → Additional Permissions and make sure AutoFirma isn't blocked.

Step 5 — Allow AutoFirma Through Windows Firewall

AutoFirma opens a small local server on your PC to communicate with the browser. Windows Firewall sometimes blocks this. Go to Control Panel → Windows Defender Firewall → Allow an app through firewall, find AutoFirma in the list, and make sure both Private and Public boxes are ticked.

Step 6 — Run AutoFirma as Administrator Every Time

If none of the above has solved it, try setting AutoFirma to always run as Administrator. Find the AutoFirma shortcut on your desktop, right-click → Properties → Compatibility tab → tick "Run this program as an administrator". Apply and close. This is a common fix on shared or managed Windows accounts.

When to Get Help

If you've worked through all six steps and AutoFirma still won't cooperate, the problem is usually one of two things: a deeper Windows permissions issue on a corporate or managed PC, or a corrupt user profile. These need someone to look at the actual machine. We see this regularly at Campoverde Repair — it's rarely anything dramatic, just something that needs hands-on attention.

One Last Tip

Keep a note of your certificate's expiry date and set a calendar reminder a month before. Most AutoFirma headaches in Spain come down to an expired certificate that nobody noticed. Renewal is free and takes about 20 minutes online — far less painful than a last-minute panic before a tax deadline.

FAQ

Why does AutoFirma say it can't find my certificate?

Your digital certificate is either not installed in the Windows Certificate Store, or it has expired. Open certmgr.msc, go to Personal → Certificates, and check it's listed with a valid date. If it's missing or expired, renew it via www.sede.fnmt.gob.es before trying again.

Does AutoFirma work on Windows 11?

Yes, but you must use the latest version of AutoFirma and an up-to-date Java install. Older combinations frequently fail on Windows 11. Download both fresh from their official sites and install AutoFirma as Administrator.

Which browser works best with AutoFirma in Spain?

Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge are the most reliable choices on Windows. Firefox can work but sometimes needs extra configuration. Avoid using Internet Explorer — it is no longer supported by AutoFirma.

Can I use AutoFirma if I work on a company or managed PC?

Sometimes, but managed PCs restrict what software can run and how it connects to the internet. If you've followed all the steps and it still fails, the IT restrictions on your machine are likely the cause. Bring the laptop to a local technician — it usually takes less than an hour to resolve.
